What is the Legal Tint Percentage in California?

Did you know that tinting your car windows improves the comfort of your cabin? Window film also blocks out up to 99% of dangerous UV rays. This protects your skin and preserves your vehicle’s interior.

With so many benefits, tons of Californians are chomping at the bit to tint their windows. But before you do, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with California window tinting laws.

This article explains everything you need to know about California window tinting laws.

California Laws: The Basics

The Golden State has specific window film guidelines. A basic rundown of these laws includes:

  • Restricts windshield tint on the top four inches

  • Front side windows must have 70%+ VLT

  • Back side and rear windows can have any tint darkness

  • Aftermarket window tint must let 88% or more of light shine through

These laws apply to sedans, SUVs, and vans.

Window Tint Darkness

As previously mentioned, California requires all vehicles to have a 70% VLT on their front side windows. VLT, or visible light transmission, is the amount of light that passes through the film.

The lower the VLT percentage is, the less light will be able to penetrate the window tint. For example, tints with 5% VLT block out 95% of the outside light. Films with 50% VLT block out 50% of the sun’s rays.

You can make your back and rear windows as dark as you’d like. However, your car must have dual-side mirrors if you tint the rear windows.

Window Tint Colors

Window films come in many colors. Motorists love the endless variety! Before you go and tint your windows bright red, you need to know the state laws.

California prohibits the use of color-altering tints on all car windows. Furthermore, applying amber, blue, and red tint to your front windshield is illegal.

Other California Window Tint Rules and Regulations

In addition to VLT and color, California has several other window tinting regulations. These include:

  • Film manufacturers must certify the tints they sell, and drivers must have the certificate in their cars

  • You can only use non-reflective strips on the top four inches of your windshield

  • If your rear windows are tinted, you must install a dual-side mirror

  • You cannot use any colored tint on your side mirrors

Medical Exemptions

California does allow medical exemptions for drivers with specific health conditions. Certain drivers can install tints on their front and side windows to protect them from the sun.

You’ll need a signed letter from a medical professional to apply for a California window tint medical exemption. You can submit your application on the California Department of Motor Vehicles’ website.

Consequences of Non-Compliance

If you do not abide by these laws, you’ll receive a Violating Vehicle Code 26708. The first fine will cost you $25. A second infraction (this is not a felony or misdemeanor) will result in a $197 fine.
