Why San Jose Vehicles Need Ceramic Window Tint

XPEL PRIME XR Plus vs. XR Black: What We Install

We carry two ceramic film lines from XPEL’s PRIME series. Both reject 99% of UV rays, both earn The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation, and both carry XPEL’s transferable lifetime warranty against cracking, peeling, bubbling, and color change. The difference comes down to infrared heat rejection and aesthetics.

XPEL PRIME XR Plus

XR Plus is XPEL’s flagship nano-ceramic film. It uses multilayer ceramic particle technology to reject up to 98% of infrared heat at 1025nm (per XPEL’s published spec sheet), with an infrared energy rejection (IRER) of 70% across the full 780–2500nm range. The film has a subtle blue hue and delivers the highest total solar energy rejection (TSER) in XPEL’s lineup up to 71% at the darkest shade.

If you want maximum heat performance without going darker, this is the film. XR Plus 70, for example, lets through 67% of visible light (making it legal for California front windows) while still blocking 92% of infrared heat at 1025nm.

XPEL PRIME XR Black

XR Black is a neutral-tone nano-ceramic film with a more traditional charcoal look. It rejects up to 85% infrared heat at 1025nm in the 70 VLT shade (78% in darker shades) with an IRER of 58–64% depending on shade. It’s a strong performer at a more accessible price point, ideal for drivers who want solid heat and UV protection without the premium tier.

XR Black 5 5% 99% 78% 58% 66% 95%

Both films are available in shades ranging from 70 VLT (lightest) down to 5 VLT (limo). We’ll help you choose based on your vehicle, your driving habits, and what’s legal on each window under California law.

Window Tinting and California Law

California Vehicle Code Section 26708 sets clear boundaries on how dark you can tint each window. Front-side windows must allow at least 70% of visible light through; no exceptions. Rear-side windows and the back window can be any shade; go as dark as 5 VLT if you want. The windshield allows a non-reflective tint strip only on the top four inches. If you tint the rear window, dual side mirrors are required. Red, amber, and blue tint colors are prohibited on all glass. For a full breakdown, see our guide to California window tint laws .

What this means, practically: XR Plus 70 and XR Black 70 are both compliant for front-side windows, giving you real heat rejection within the legal limit. On the rear glass, we install any shade you prefer, and that’s where going darker pays off, since heat rejection scales with lower VLT percentages.

Window Tinting for Teslas and Electric Vehicles

We’ve earned the nickname “Masters of EV” across the Bay Area, and a big part of that reputation comes from how we approach Tesla window tinting. Teslas and other EVs present unique tinting challenges that a general shop often overlooks.

Tesla’s panoramic glass roofs, standard on Model 3, Model Y, and Model X, are massive heat entry points. The roof glass has some factory IR filtering, but owners consistently report hot cabins, especially in rear seating positions. We install XPEL PRIME XR Plus on the roof panel to cut infrared heat by up to 96–98%, meaningfully reducing HVAC load and helping preserve battery range. That’s a tangible EV benefit: less energy spent cooling the cabin means more miles on the road.

Tesla’s side and rear glass is also tempered (not laminated), so it transmits UVA light. We tint every window on Teslas, including the small quarter panels and rear hatch areas, some shops skip. Plan for a full working day (approximately eight hours) for complete Model 3, Y, or X tinting, because we template every panel precisely using XPEL’s DAP software rather than rushing the fit.

We handle Rivian R1T and R1S, BMW iX, Porsche Taycan, Mercedes EQS, Lucid Air, and other EVs with the same level of detail. If your EV has advanced driver-assistance sensors behind the windshield or side glass, we know where the keep-out zones are and work around them.

What to Expect: Our Tinting Process

Every window tint job at Alphawerks follows the same process, whether you’re bringing in a Honda Civic from Rose Garden or a Porsche from Almaden Valley.

  • Consultation and film selection: We’ll walk you through XR Plus vs. XR Black, discuss which shades make sense for each window, and review California’s VLT requirements so you leave with a legal, high-performing setup.
  • Surface preparation: Windows are cleaned inside and out to remove every trace of dust, debris, and residue. On the interior side, we use protective measures (including a soak rope along the base of the glass) to prevent water from reaching your dashboard, electronics, or trim.
  • Precision cutting: We use XPEL’s DAP (Design Access Program) software to pre-cut every panel to your vehicle’s exact window specs. This eliminates the guesswork of freehand cutting on the car and ensures edge-to-edge coverage without trimming against your glass.
  • Application and finishing: Film is applied wet to the interior surface, then squeegeed to remove air and water, resulting in a smooth, bubble-free bond. We hand-finish every edge and corner, checking for imperfections before moving to the next window.
  • Curing and walkthrough: After installation, we’ll walk you through proper care during the curing period, typically 3–5 days, during which you should avoid rolling the windows down. Small water bubbles or slight haze may be visible during curing and will dissipate naturally.

Typical Turnaround Times

Service Estimated Time
Two front windows ~2 hours
Full vehicle (sides + rear) 3.5–4 hours
Full vehicle + windshield ~6 hours
Tesla Model 3 / Y / X (complete) Full day (~8 hours)

Why San Jose Drivers Choose Alphawerks

  • XPEL Authorized Dealer and Certified Installer: We don’t carry generic film. Every roll we install is XPEL PRIME, backed by XPEL’s manufacturer warranty and installed by technicians who’ve been trained and certified on these specific products.
  • Dual 10-Year Warranty: XPEL covers the film for 10 years against cracking, peeling, bubbling, fading, and discoloration. We add our own 10-year installation warranty on top of that. If anything goes wrong with the workmanship, we’ll fix it, no arguments, no fine print.
  • A decade of hands-on experience: Our team has been installing PPF, tint, vinyl, and coatings since 2014. We’ve worked on SEMA show builds, high-end European cars, and daily drivers alike. We’re members of SEMA and the Professional Restylers Organization (PRO).
  • EV and Tesla specialization: We’re not learning in your car. We’ve tinted hundreds of Teslas and understand the roof panel geometries, sensor placements, and adhesion characteristics that make EV tinting different from a standard sedan.
  • Full-service protection shop: Window tinting is one piece of the puzzle. Pair it with San Jose paint protection film to guard your paint, or add a ceramic coating for long-term gloss and hydrophobic protection. We’ll help you build a package that makes sense for how you actually use your car.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, with restrictions. Front side windows must transmit at least 70% of visible light. Rear side windows and the back glass can be any shade. The windshield allows only a non-reflective strip on the top four inches. Red, amber, and blue tint colors are prohibited. Read our full guide onv legal tint in California for details.

Ceramic tint uses nano-ceramic particles to reject infrared heat without metallic interference. Dyed film relies on a colored dye layer that absorbs some heat but fades over time and offers minimal IR rejection. Ceramic films like XPEL PRIME XR Plus reject up to 98% of infrared heat compared to roughly 5–15% for basic dyed film, a massive performance gap. Ceramic tint also won’t interfere with GPS, cellular, Bluetooth, or toll-pass signals.

XPEL PRIME ceramic films are engineered not to fade, bubble, or turn purple. Both XR Plus and XR Black carry XPEL’s transferable lifetime warranty against those defects. In real-world terms, a properly installed ceramic tint will maintain its appearance and performance for 10–15+ years.

It depends on your priorities. Tesla’s glass roof includes some factory-installed infrared filtering, but many owners still notice heat in the rear seats and increased HVAC use. Installing XPEL PRIME XR Plus on the roof glass can reduce IR heat by up to 96–98%, helping keep the cabin cooler and reducing energy draw on the battery.

No. We recommend waiting 3–5 days to allow the adhesive to cure fully. Rolling windows down too soon can shift the film before it’s bonded. During the curing period, you may see small water bubbles or a slight haze. This is normal and will clear on its own.

Yes. We install XPEL PRIME XR Plus and XR Black on windshields at the legal 70% VLT shade. Even at this light shade, ceramic film rejects significant infrared heat and blocks 99% of UV, a meaningful upgrade, especially for long commutes.
