Tesla Window Tinting

XPEL CERAMIC FILMS FOR MODEL 3, Y, S & X

If you own a Tesla in the Bay Area, you already know the glass situation: massive windshields, panoramic glass roofs, and side windows that let in every degree of California heat. Factory glass blocks some UV and infrared light, but it’s not enough to keep your cabin comfortable on a July drive down I-280 or to stop your interior from fading over time.

At AlphaWerks Garage in Santa Clara, we tint Teslas every single day. Our team has earned the nickname “Masters of EV” for a reason: we understand the unique glass characteristics, the sensitive electronics, and the specific film patterns that Tesla’s frameless doors and curved surfaces demand. We’re an XPEL authorized dealer, and we exclusively install XPEL PRIME XR and XPEL PRIME XR Plus ceramic films, the same films trusted by Tesla owners across the country for their heat rejection, UV protection, and optical clarity.

Whether you drive a Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X, or Cybertruck, this page covers everything you need to know about professional window tinting for your Tesla: the films we use, what we recommend by model, how California tint law applies, and what to expect when you bring your car to our shop.

Why Tesla Owners Tint Their Windows

  • Tesla designed its vehicles around glass, and that’s both a selling point and a challenge. The panoramic glass roof on the Model 3 and Model Y is stunning, but it turns your cabin into a greenhouse without proper film. Here’s what professional ceramic tint actually does for your Tesla:
  • Blocks up to 98% of infrared heat. XPEL PRIME XR Plus is one of the highest-performing ceramic films on the market. That means dramatically less heat entering through every window and your glass roof and less strain on your HVAC system, which translates to better range.
  • Rejects 99% of UV rays. Even with Tesla’s factory UV filtering, aftermarket ceramic film adds an extra layer of protection, helping keep your leather, Alcantara, and dashboard from fading and cracking over the years of sun exposure.
  • Reduces glare. Especially on the panoramic roof and windshield, ceramic tint cuts harsh light without darkening your view. You get clarity and comfort at the same time.
  • Preserves battery range. When your AC doesn’t have to fight a greenhouse effect, your Tesla maintains range more efficiently. Multiple owners tell us they notice a measurable difference after a full tint job, particularly on the Model Y.
  • Adds privacy and security. Darker tints on rear windows create a sleeker look while keeping valuables out of sight important for a vehicle that draws attention in every parking lot.

XPEL PRIME Ceramic Films We Install

We install two films from XPEL’s PRIME line, both engineered with nano-ceramic particle technology. Unlike standard dyed tint, these films won’t fade, bubble, or turn purple over time, and they deliver dramatically better heat rejection.

XPEL PRIME XR (XR Black)

XR Black is a neutral-tone nano-ceramic film that provides excellent UV protection and solid infrared heat rejection. It maintains a clean, non-reflective appearance from inside the vehicle, which most Tesla owners prefer for everyday driving. Available in VLT shades of 70%, 55%, 35%, 20%, and 5%, this film is our go-to recommendation for Tesla owners who want strong performance without the slight blue hue of our top-tier option.

XPEL PRIME XR Plus

XR Plus is XPEL’s flagship ceramic film and offers the highest infrared heat rejection in its lineup, up to 98%. It carries a slight blue hue that most Tesla owners find complements the vehicle’s aesthetic perfectly, especially on darker paint colors. Also available in 70%, 55%, 35%, 20%, and 5% VLT. If maximum heat rejection is your priority (or if you spend a lot of time parked in direct sun), XR Plus is the upgrade we recommend. Both films carry XPEL’s manufacturer warranty in addition to our own lifetime installation warranty. That’s two layers of coverage, one from the brand, one from us.

What Makes Tinting a Tesla Different

Not all cars are created equal when it comes to window tint installation, and Teslas are particularly unique. Here’s what we account for on every Tesla tint job:

Glass Roof & Panoramic Windshield

The Model 3 and Model Y feature a single-piece glass roof that extends from the windshield to the rear of the vehicle. While Tesla’s glass includes some factory IR rejection, it’s nowhere near the level of a purpose-built ceramic film. We install a dedicated cut of XPEL film on the roof glass to dramatically reduce heat transfer and UV penetration. The windshield is equally oversized; it’s one of the largest in any production car. A ceramic-tinted brow or full windshield film makes a noticeable difference in cabin temperature.

Frameless Doors

The Model 3 and Model Y use frameless door windows, meaning the glass retracts slightly as the door opens and closes. This requires precise film trimming and careful handling during installation to avoid contact with the seals. It’s one of the reasons Tesla tint jobs take longer than a typical sedan. Our full tint on a Model 3 or Y is an all-day (8-hour) appointment.

Sensitive Electronics & Interior

Tesla interiors are packed with electronics, touchscreens, ambient lighting, and sensors. We use protective barriers and our “soak rope” technique to prevent any water from reaching sensitive components during the installation. Our team has installed film on hundreds of Teslas and knows exactly where the vulnerable points are on each model.

California Tint Law & Your Tesla

California has specific regulations about how dark you can tint your windows, and they’re important to get right. We ensure every Tesla leaves our shop in full compliance with state law. Here’s the short version:
  • Windshield: Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 4 inches only (or a 70% VLT ceramic film on the full windshield with a medical exemption).
  • Front side windows: Must allow at least 70% VLT after installation. We use a 70% ceramic film on front windows to stay legal while still providing significant heat rejection and UV protection.
  • Rear side windows & rear windshield: Any darkness level is permitted. Most Tesla owners choose 20% or 35% for a balanced look.
  • Glass roof: No specific VLT restriction applies to the roof panel. We typically install 5% or 20% for maximum heat rejection overhead.
For the full breakdown of what’s legal in California, including rules for sedans vs. SUVs, reflection limits, and required stickers, read our complete guide to California’s window tinting laws. Every tint installation at AlphaWerks includes the required manufacturer certification sticker, so you’re covered if you’re ever pulled over.

Our Tesla Tinting Process

Tesla tint jobs are more involved than a standard vehicle, and we don’t cut corners. Here’s what to expect when you book with us:
  • Consultation. We discuss your goals, recommend VLT levels for each window, and confirm California-legal options. If you’re also interested in paint protection film or ceramic coating, we can bundle services and save you a trip.
  • Preparation. We thoroughly clean every window surface, then protect your Tesla’s interior touchscreen, dashboard, seats, and electronics with barriers and our soak-roping technique to prevent water intrusion.
  • Precision cutting. We use XPEL’s DAP (Design Access Program) software to pre-cut film to your Tesla’s exact specifications. Every Tesla model has unique patterns, and we fine-tune each piece for a gap-free fit around frameless doors and curved glass.
  • Installation. Film is applied to the interior side of each window using a water solution for precise positioning, then squeegeed to remove air and ensure smooth, bubble-free adhesion.
  • Curing & quality check. We allow the film to dry and begin bonding, then inspect every window for imperfections before returning your Tesla.
  • Walkthrough. We review the finished work with you, explain the 48-hour curing period (don’t roll your windows down), and cover care instructions to keep your tint looking perfect for years.
Full tint on a Tesla Model 3 or Model Y takes a full working day (approximately 8 hours). Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck may require additional time depending on coverage. We recommend dropping off in the morning and picking up at the end of the day.

Pair Your Tint with Full Tesla Protection

Most Tesla owners who come in for tint end up protecting more than just their glass. Since your car is already in our shop for the day, it’s the perfect time to add:
  • Paint protection film (PPF): XPEL Ultimate Plus clear film to guard your Tesla’s paint against rock chips, scratches, and road debris. Especially popular on the front bumper, hood, and fenders.
  • Ceramic coating: A hydrophobic layer over your paint (or PPF) that makes your Tesla easier to clean, enhances gloss, and adds UV protection to the exterior.

Bundling services saves you time and often saves money. Ask us about our Tesla protection packages when you request a quote.

Dual Warranty Coverage

When you get your Tesla tinted at AlphaWerks, you’re covered twice:

  • XPEL manufacturer’s warranty against defects in the film itself, fading, bubbling, peeling, or discoloration.
  • AlphaWerks lifetime installation warranty against any workmanship issues. If there’s ever a problem with how the film was applied, we’ll fix it.

This dual warranty structure is one of the strongest in the Bay Area and gives our customers real peace of mind. We stand behind every job we do.

Tesla Window Tinting FAQ

Yes, within limits. Front side windows must allow at least 70% VLT, the windshield can only have tint on the top 4 inches (unless you have a medical exemption), and rear windows can be any darkness. We ensure every installation meets California’s tint law requirements, and we include the required certification sticker on every car.
It depends on your priorities. Our most popular combination for Tesla Model 3 and Model Y owners is 70% on the front side windows (California legal maximum), 20% on the rear side windows and rear windshield, and 5% on the glass roof for maximum overhead heat rejection. We’re happy to show you shade samples during your consultation.
We strongly recommend it. Even though Tesla’s factory roof glass includes some UV and IR filtering, it’s not comparable to a dedicated ceramic film. Installing XPEL PRIME XR or XR Plus on the roof panel makes a dramatic difference in cabin temperature. It’s often the single upgrade our customers notice most.
Ceramic tint uses nano-ceramic particles to reject infrared heat, while standard dyed tint only darkens the glass without meaningful heat rejection. Ceramic film also won’t fade, bubble, or turn purple over time. We exclusively install ceramic film at AlphaWerks because the performance difference is significant and it offers better long-term value.
No. XPEL PRIME ceramic films are non-metallic, so they won’t interfere with GPS, cellular signals, Bluetooth, or Tesla’s camera and sensor systems. We avoid tinting directly over Autopilot camera housings and follow Tesla-specific installation protocols.
A full tint on a Model 3 or Model Y (all windows + glass roof) takes approximately 8 hours. If you’re adding the windshield, plan on the same day. We recommend dropping off in the morning and picking up at the end of the day. Front-two-window jobs take about 2 hours.
Don’t roll your windows down for 48 hours after installation. Full curing takes 2–4 weeks, depending on the weather. It’s normal to see small water pockets or a slightly hazy appearance during curing; they’ll disappear as the adhesive fully bonds.
Yes. We have XPEL DAP patterns for the Cybertruck and have tinted multiple units. The Cybertruck’s massive windshield and unique glass geometry require extra care and time, but our team handles it. Contact us for Cybertruck-specific pricing.
You receive dual coverage: XPEL’s manufacturer warranty on the film itself, plus our AlphaWerks lifetime installation warranty on workmanship. It’s one of the most comprehensive warranty packages you’ll find for window tint in the Bay Area.
